During the summer of 2024, the Olympic Games are set to arrive in Paris, bringing with them numerous tourists. The goal of this project is to propose an innovative solution to transform getting around the city into a pleasant and enriching experience.

The goal of this project is to study a “Wicked Problem” case through the use of the design thinking method. This approach allows us to stay focused on users at every stage to best meet their needs. It enables progress toward the best possible solution, even when faced with a complex problem, thanks to an alternation of iteration, testing, and empathy with users.

The different entities have fallen significantly behind in what they planned to offer for transportation in Paris during the Olympics. For example, transportation was supposed to be free during this period; instead, prices have been increased to pay the transportation staff mobilized for the event.

Thanks to this research and these interviews, I created two personas representing my two user groups. They later helped me keep the user profiles in mind when I was addressing certain questions during concept creation and ideation.

I quickly noticed that one of the biggest shortcomings in transportation is the lack of activities, during several interviews with users, I observed that they actually desire activities during these times.

Following this conclusion, I decided to focus on the lack of activities in transportation and during city travel, with a revised brief: Create a new experience that transforms trips around Paris into a cultural journey.

I chose to define five guidelines for the creation process; they are there to both assist and guide me in the design, and also represent the different challenges that my solution aims to solve.

Ideation

Ideation

For the ideation of my project, I decided to generate as many ideas as possible on sticky notes (FigJam) to later merge them into more complete and refined concepts. The only constraint for these ideas was that they had to align with at least one of my guidelines.

I also divided my ideas into two groups: digital and physical.

Once this initial phase was completed and my first concepts were organized, I sorted through them, eliminating those that addressed the challenges the least, until I was left with three preliminary concepts.

Final pre-concepts

Final pre-concepts

Final pre-concepts

  • Creating a fitness trail in Paris: The idea was to set up one or more fitness trails in the city that would allow everyone to try out certain Olympic disciplines during their travels. The concept involved placing Olympic-themed play areas around the city to create routes between event locations. I also thought about adding tracking in an app or on a website, which would allow users to keep a record of their performances on the different activities.

  • Creating a scavenger hunt adventure in Paris: Here, the idea is to create adventure routes where players would collect clues, solve puzzles, and decipher codes to progress through an adventure across Paris. It would also provide a fun way to discover the city’s mysteries.

  • Creating beacons to explore the city: This idea proposes setting up a large network of “beacons” throughout the city, each containing information about the history and culture of the place where they are located. The goal is to allow tourists to explore Paris in all its hidden corners and give residents a chance to learn more about the places they pass through every day. In addition to these markers, I wanted to create an app to serve as a companion for discovering the city through these markers, enabling users to create personalized tour routes and catalog the markers they have already encountered.

I finally chose to focus on the last concept, but I kept in mind interesting elements from the other two concepts, particularly the playful aspect and the implementation of interactive elements in the city.

My final solution is also divided into two complementary parts: the markers and the app.

The beacons

The beacons

The beacons

I discovered that the iconic “Histoire de Paris” signs designed in the 1990s by Philippe Starck need to be replaced, and the city of Paris issued a call for proposals in 2009 to transform them into interactive panels, but there has been no news since.

I took this opportunity to position the beacons as the new “Histoire de Paris” signs.

The beacons will offer several features for passersby:

  • They will include written information about the history and cultural elements of the location where they are situated, along with a unique bas-relief illustration for each one.

  • They can be scanned with the app using a QR code or NFC chip.

  • They will include a small tutorial and an explanation of the concept to encourage passersby to download the app. Additionally, fillable maps will be available at nearby shops for people without mobile phones who want to try the experience.

The app

The app

The app

The app is the backbone of the concept; it centralizes the experience. It primarily serves users to create and follow routes through the city that will pass by the various beacons to discover.

Users will have the option to create their own route or follow a predefined route.

  • To create their own route: They can enter their starting and ending points and choose from various filters so that the app generates a personalized route passing by some beacons. The goal is also to serenely explore the smaller corners of the city while allowing users to go where they wish.

  • To choose a predefined route: They can also select from a catalog of routes available in the app or created by the community.

Among these, some could be created for specific events. For example, for the Olympics, special beacons discussing sporting events or notable figures in the world of sports could be established. This could also be an opportunity to set up participatory beacons with workshops at certain locations where passersby can try out some of the sports featured in the Olympics.
